Treatments

Wood preservative and protective treatment for your garden shed is paramount to it's longevity, specifically if it is made out of wood, as most sheds are.

The exterior wood of garden sheds is what makes them so appealing in most circumstances. The natural, rustic character of the wood is charming and its visual appeal allows it to slot in perfectly amongst plants, trees and garden fences in people's backyards.

That's why it's so important to look after it.

At BillyOh, we offer a variety of treatment options for wood protection in a range of colours, to suit both new and old wooden surfaces.

FAQs

How do wood preservers work?

Wood preservers work in a variety of ways, depending on the product. In most cases, they contain chemicals that are toxic to bacteria, fungi and insects, such as copper.

How to paint a wooden shed?

To paint preserver on your wooden shed, first ensure the timber is completely dry. You can use a brush, roller or spray in most cases. Make sure to follow the grain of the wood.

How much paint/preserver do I need?

Protek Multi-Purpose Wood Treatment, the brand we stock, recommends that their product covers about 10m² per litre. So for a 6 foot x 4 foot shed, you'd have a total wall surface area of around 120ft if your wall panels were all 6ft tall (we calculated it earlier). 120ft = 36m. At 10m² per litre, you'd need about 4 litres for a 6x4. Note that Protek advise a second coat (two coats are recommended for sheds) will use much less product than the first coat. We sell stain and protector in 1, 2.5 and 5 litre tubs. You can calculate how much you'd need depending on the size of your shed yourself.

Is wood preservative the same as pressure treated?

No. Pressure treatment is an industrial method and works by soaking liquid preservatives deep into the wood. Typical wood stain or wood treatment that you can buy from the shop and paint on yourself will only cover the surface of the wood.

How often should I treat my shed?

With manual treatment, you're probably going to want to reapply around once a year, dependent on your product's instructions. Pressure treatment alleviates the necessity to do this for around 10-15 years. Some wood treatment can offer protection for up to 40 years.

Is wood preserver waterproof?

Most classic wood protection is at least water resistant and weather proof, if not waterproof altogether. Our Protek Shed & Fence Treatment contains wax additives to ensure extra protection against water.

Does wood preserver kill woodworm?

Yes, wood preservative is a woodworm killer and also prevents rot, decay and infestation from a multitude of other insects.

Treatment process

At BillyOh, we recommend treating your wood surface with wood preserver once a year to keep it free from rot, decay and algae growth. It can be applied simply using a paintbrush and painting in the direction of the natural wood grain. Make sure to coat it a couple of times to ensure that every portion of the building vulnerable to the outside is protected.

Untreated wood can be susceptible to inevitable and irreparable damage over time, from damp growth as a result of unavoidable moisture in the building and insect infestation.

Pressure treatment

While manual application of wood preserver is an effective treatment for your building, we also offer pressure treatment as an option upon first purchase of many BillyOh products.

Pressure treatment is an industrial process. It involves infusing the wood with chemical preservatives by submerging it in liquid inside a vacuum. Pressure-treated wood is super-protected against any sort of infection or fungi, and pressure treatment increases the lifespan of the wood.
